I met with the DON at 6 am today. We quickly went over my objections again before she assigned me to a project in the HR department. Today was our facility's Annual Employee Awards Ceremony. I'll admit, initially I was concerned that I would be spending the day decorating and running errands. So, I mentioned to Linda, (our extremely management oriented DON) "How might I incorporate assisting Tanya (HR manager) with the Employee Awards into management activities as I'm intended to do?" She looked at me as if I were a naive little child, and said, "You will focus today on how important staff appreciation is for this facility's employee retention and recruiting, and how the facility budgets expenses for this type of event. You will also direct other management staff (who are to present the awards), all while managing your time wisely and taking notes on your impressions and experiences." I felt like an idiot. She was right, this would be a great opportunity for me to look at this type of employee event from a managers perspective. It turned out to be a great first clinical day experience.
